Today in class, we began looking at the basics of Earth’s motions, rotation and revolution. For homework, please complete the Engrade quiz, entitled “Earth’s Motions #1.” I will close this quiz at the end of the school day on Monday.

Also, don’t forget to continue work on mid-term review. The mid-term will be on Tuesday, February 14, 2012.

Today in class, we reviewed the proof of a round Earth and discussed evidence that proves that it is rotating (spinning). For homework, please visit the following site, which is a tutorial on Jean Foucault and his famous pendulum: http://www.calacademy.org/products/pendulum/

On a piece of looseleaf, please answer the following questions based on this tutorial. Record your answers neatly and in complete sentences.

  • 1. What is the definition of a pendulum?
  • 2. What are the parts of a pendulum?
  • 3. What are the 3 scientific uses of a pendulum?
  • 4. How do you think a pendulum can be used to show that the earth spins?
  • 5. Describe the 2 ways early scientists tried to prove rotation and explain why they were unsuccessful.
  • 6. Describe, in detail, how Foucault’s Pendulum proves that the Earth is rotating.
  • 7. Describe at least two other ways that the rotation of the Earth affects our lives.
Your responses will be collected as a lab tomorrow (Friday).
